About the show

This popular comic opera features such well-known tunes as “We Sail the Ocean Blue”, “A British Tar” and “He is an English Man”, complete with a classic Gilbertian plot: the beautiful heroine, the noble hero, the pompous noble and the evil villain, all resolved in a slightly unlikely fashion!

HMS Pinafore, or The Lass That Loved a Sailor, was Gilbert and Sullivan’s first massive hit, and takes place aboard the British ship HMS Pinafore. The captain's daughter, Josephine, is in love with a lower-class sailor, Ralph Rackstraw. However, her father intends her to marry the First Lord of the Admiralty, Sir Joseph Porter.

She abides by her father's wishes at first, but Sir Joseph's advocacy of the equality of humankind encourages Ralph and Josephine to overturn conventional social order. They declare their love for each other and eventually plan to elope. The captain discovers this plan, but, as in many of the Gilbert and Sullivan operas, all is resolved with a convenient surprise twist.

Sally Avery directs with MD Mark Pim.
